What Is CEREC Technology
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. It is a CAD/CAM system that allows our team to design and mill a custom ceramic crown entirely within the dental office, eliminating the need for a dental laboratory and a second appointment.
The system uses a digital intraoral scanner to capture precise 3D images of the prepared tooth and surrounding structures. Those images are used to design a restoration on-screen using specialized software, which is then sent to an in-office milling unit that carves the crown from a high-quality ceramic block. The entire process, from scanning to placement, is completed in a single visit.
What to Expect During Your Same-Day Crown Appointment
A CEREC crown appointment takes approximately two hours from start to finish. Here is what the process looks like.

Examination and Preparation
We evaluate the tooth, take digital X-rays, and administer local anesthesia. The tooth is then shaped to remove any damaged structure and create the right foundation for the crown.

Digital Scanning
A digital intraoral scanner captures detailed 3D images of the prepared tooth and surrounding teeth. There are no physical impression trays or messy impression materials involved.

Crown Design
Using the digital scan, our team designs your custom crown on-screen using CEREC software. Adjustments to shape, size, and fit are made digitally before milling begins.

In-Office Milling
The design is sent to our in-office milling unit, which carves your crown from a ceramic block selected to match your tooth shade. Milling typically takes 15 to 20 minutes.

Fit Check and Bonding
The milled crown is checked for fit, bite, and appearance. Any minor refinements are made before the crown is permanently bonded to the prepared tooth and polished to a natural finish.
When a Dental Crown Is Needed
A crown is a full-coverage restoration that fits over the entire visible surface of a tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and appearance. Crowns are recommended when:
- A tooth has been significantly weakened by decay or damage
- A large filling has failed or compromised too much of the tooth structure
- A tooth has cracked or fractured in a way that cannot be repaired with bonding or an onlay
- A tooth has undergone root canal therapy and needs protection from fracture
- A tooth is severely worn down due to grinding or bite issues
