What CEREC Technology Makes Possible
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. In practical terms, it is an integrated system that combines digital scanning, computer-aided design, and in-office milling to produce a ceramic crown from start to finish without ever leaving our Peoria office.
The process uses no physical impressions, no temporary crowns, and no external laboratory. Everything happens chairside using technology that has been refined over decades and is trusted by dental practices around the world. The result is a restoration that fits with exceptional accuracy and is ready to be permanently bonded on the same day your tooth is prepared.
Your Same-Day Crown Appointment, Step by Step
Inlays and onlays are typically completed over two appointments.

Examination and Treatment Planning
We evaluate the tooth, confirm that a crown is the appropriate restoration, and discuss the process with you before anything begins. X-rays are taken if needed to assess the root and surrounding bone.

Tooth Preparation
The tooth is numbed with local anesthetic and shaped to accommodate the crown. Any decay or damaged structure is removed during this step. The preparation is precise and designed to preserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible.

Digital Scanning
Instead of traditional putty impressions, we use a digital intraoral scanner to capture a highly accurate 3D image of the prepared tooth and surrounding dentition. This scan takes only a few minutes, is completely comfortable, and produces a more precise model than conventional impressions.

Crown Design
The digital scan is used to design your crown using CAD software at the chairside workstation. We can see the design in real time and make adjustments to ensure the shape, contour, and bite relationship are exactly right before a single piece of ceramic is milled.

In-Office Milling
The finalized design is sent directly to our in-office milling unit, which carves your crown from a solid block of high-quality dental ceramic. The milling process takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes while you relax in the chair. Once milled, the crown is refined and glazed to achieve a surface texture and sheen that closely mimics natural enamel.

Bonding and Final Check
The finished crown is tried in for fit and appearance before being permanently bonded to the prepared tooth. We check your bite carefully and make any final refinements so the crown feels completely natural when you leave.
When Is a Crown the Right Treatment?
A crown is recommended when a tooth has sustained damage or decay that cannot be adequately addressed with a filling, inlay, or onlay. Common situations that call for a crown include:
- A tooth with a large cavity that compromises too much of its structure for a filling to reliably restore
- A cracked or fractured tooth that needs full coverage to prevent further splitting
- A tooth that has undergone root canal therapy and needs to be protected from fracture
