What to Expect During Root Canal Treatment

Anesthesia
Local anesthetic is administered to thoroughly numb the tooth and surrounding tissue. We take our time with this step and do not proceed until you are completely comfortable. Isolation
A small rubber dam is placed around the tooth to keep the area clean and dry throughout the procedure and to prevent any irrigating solutions from reaching the rest of the mouth.

Accessing the Pulp
A small opening is made through the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals beneath. This is done with precision instruments to preserve as much natural tooth structure as possible.

Cleaning and Shaping
The infected pulp tissue is carefully removed from each canal. The canals are then cleaned, disinfected, and shaped to prepare them for filling. This is the most involved part of the procedure and the step that requires the most precision.

Filling and Sealing
The cleaned canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and sealed to prevent bacteria from re-entering. A temporary or permanent filling is placed in the access opening above.

Crown Placement
In most cases, a crown is recommended following root canal therapy to restore the tooth's full strength and protect it from fracture. We will discuss the timing and specifics of crown placement at your appointment.
